A. Wilbur Crane

A. Wilbur Crane - Winter Landscape

Winter Landscape

A. Wilbur Crane's original oil painting, Winter Landscape, was probably executed in the first decade of the twentieth century. It bears the stamp of the Paris American Art Company on its verso. The long lived Paris American Art Co. was a major art supply store in Montparnasse. Thus in all probability Wilbur Crane painted this fine landscape while living and working in France.

Title: Winter Landscape
Artist: Crane, A. Wilbur ' Wilbur Crane' (New York City, 1875 - New Rochelle, NY, 1934)
Date: c. 1900 - 1910
Medium: Original Oil Painting on Canvas Board
Note: A. Wilbur Crane: An American painter of landscapes and figure studies, Wilbur Crane was a student of both William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri in New York. A full member of New York's Salmagundi Club, Crane's studio was in Broadway and his home in New Rochelle. Primarily an Impressionist, A. Wilbur Crane exhibited his paintings in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and elsewhere from approximately 1900 to his demise in 1934.
Some sources have erroneously listed two separate artists, 'Wilbur Crane' and 'A. Wilbur Crane', with the painter residing in New Rochelle as 'Wilbur Crane'. Yet they are, in fact, one and the same. This is verified by the New York Times obituary for Dec. 23, 1934, under the rather bizarre title, "A. Wilbur Crane; Artist Stricken in New Rochelle While Buying Yule Tree.".
Provenance: This orignal Wilbur Crane painting hails from the estate of LeRoy Latham (1874-1938) and thence to his heirs. LeRoy Latham was Chairman of Latham Lithographing Company (Latham Litho & Printing Co.), also listed as the (Latham Lith. & Ptg. Co.). Situated in Brooklyn, New York, it was one of America's largest lithographic printing establishments in the early twentieth century. His large print collection consisted of many fine examples of French and British nineteenth century lithographs as well as contemporary lithographs, paintings, etchings and wood engravings.
Size: 12 7/8 X 9 1/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  UnMatted
Condition: Painted upon canvas board and bearing the stamp of the Paris American Art Co on the verso. Signed "A. Wilbur Crane" to the lower right. Soiling has occurred but can be completely removed with a sound cleaning. In conclusion "Winter Landscape" stands as a fine, original example of the landscape art of A. Wilbur Crane.
