Cigar Label Consolidated Lithographing Corporation Brooklyn New York - White Cat Standard Quality

White Cat (Standard Quality)

"White Cat" is an original chromolithographic advertising cigar label printed on 20th century wove paper around 1930 by the Consolidated Lithographing Corporation in Brooklyn, NY. The small print under the image contains the name of this lithographic firm. The main logos above and below the furry white cat, as well as the cigar band wrapped around the cigar read; "White-Cat". This is a fine, original example of American lithographic advertising and animal art.

Title: White Cat (Standard Quality)
Printer: Consolidated Lithographing Corporation, Brooklyn, NY
Date: c. 1930
Medium: Original Chromolithograph
Source: American Advertising Cigar Label
Note: Consolidated Lithographing Corporation: The Consolidated Lithographing Corporation, Brooklyn, New York was one of the largest printers of paper labels in the early 20th century. Jacob A. Voice formed the Consolidated Lithographing Corporation around 1925 by merging with Wm Steiner & Sons lithographers (1896), which was formed from Steiner & Rosenthal (1884). The Brooklyn Eagle, Sunday, July 16, 1944 contains an article relating to Jacob A. Voice. The article states that Jacob A. Voice (1884-1942) was the organizer and former president of his company. Born in Romania in 1884, he immigrated to the US at the age of three. In 1903, Voice began working for Wm Steiner & Sons & Co. and by he 1911 had organized his own company. In 1925, the name of his firm changed to Consolidated Lithographing Corporation. "White Cat" was printed by the Consolidated Lithographing Corporation around 1930. It is a spectacular example of lithographic embossing and gold bronzing. Their main logos above and below the cat, as well as the cigar band wrapped around the cigar where the furry white cat is perched read; "White-Cat" and just below the cigar it reads; "Standard Quality". This original chromolithograph remains a most sought after work of art for cat enthusiasts.
The Fortune Magazine issue for the March, 1933 contained an article concerning Voice and his company. It included an assortment of cigar-box art, thirteen original chromolithographs. A short quote from the article reads; "The artist here celebrated is Mr. Jacob A. Voice -or rather Mr. Voice's Consolidated Lithographing Corp.". "He is chosen because... he is by common acclaim Americas foremost maker." The Museum of the City of New York contains a collection of Cigar box Labels (ca, 1870-1930) donated by Jacob A. Voice in 1935 and President of Consolidated Litho at the time. The Bulletin of the National Research Council, Number 104, December, 1940, Seventh edition, published by The National Research Council National Academy of Sciences, Washington D. C. lists the address of this company at; "1013 Grant St. Brooklyn, NY" and Jacob A. Voice as President and Executive in charge of research. The Raymond Kane collection housed in the Rochester Institute of technology contains a collection of important works dating from 1890 to 1939 by Schmidt & Company, Heywood, Strasser & Voight, the American Lithographic Company and Consolidated Lithographing Corporation.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. From approximately 1880 to 1930, cigar manufacturers were one of the most competitive and clearly the most lucrative of the American businesses. They were quick to recognize the vast potential of creating colorful and eye-catching images to represent their product, such as this original example entitled, White Cat.
Because of this commercial rivalry, it was not unusual for a major cigar company to spend thousands of dollars in designing its labels. The result was that the greatest achievements in chromolithographic art were produced specifically for these companies. Further, expensive steps were added during the 'golden' age of the cigar label. Brass embossing dies were often engraved into the paper, lending a three dimensional quality to the label. As well, a bronze powder was applied like ink and burnished with brushes to create areas of gold. This was called, 'bronzing'. As antique art, advertisements such as this original example, represent the epitome of complex printmaking techniques and artistry.
Two major factors led to the downfall of this unique art. During the 1920's, the far less costly advances of photomechanical methods made this original and complex form of art all but obsolete. Secondly, the once wealthy cigar industry fell to the economic bottom of the barrel (c. 1930) due to competition from the cigarette companies and the changing economy, leaving few survivors in comparison to the thousands of companies that were destroyed and thus changing the cigar label industry forever.
