Leonhard Beck

Leonhard Beck - Saint Waudru Patroness of the city of Mons

Saint Waudru (Patroness of the city of Mons)

Leonhard Beck - Saint Waudru: Also known as Waltrude or Waldetrudis, Saint Waudru is the patroness of the city of Mons. Waudru (died, c. 686) married the Count of Hainault and raised four children. Later in life her husband decided to devote himself to meditation and prayer and retired to an abbey. Two years later (656) Waudru received the religious veil and built a small home near Chateaulieu. Because of her wisdom and piety she was constantly pressed for advice and thus founded her own convent and the city of Mons grew around it. Saint Waudru was best known for her miraculous powers of healing.

This original woodcut originates from the Images of the Saints. It is printed on hand-made, laid, eighteenth century paper as published in Vienna by Franz-Xavier Stockl in 1799. Saint Waudru is a prime, original example of the art of Leonhard Beck and of the German Renaissance woodcut.

Date: c. 1515 - 1522 (Bartsch Edition: 1799)

Publisher: Franz-Xavier Stockl, Vienna
Note: Commenting upon the Renaissance reign of Emperor Maximilian the First and his influence upon the development of the German woodcut, Stanley Appelbaum writes,

“Fond as he was of entertainments and traditions that harked back to medieval times, still this 'last of the knights' (born 1459, died 1519) possessed a sense of the power of publicity unique in his day. He saw clearly how he could enhance the glory of himself and his Hapsburg dynasty through the widest possible dissemination of inspiring words and pictures. The woodcut was the ideal medium for his purpose. From its obscure beginnings in southern Germany about 1400 as a cheap technique for reproducing art and lettering, the woodcut had risen by the end of the fifteenth century to unheard-of-brilliance as a medium of illustration in books and in separate sheets. Maximilian was fortunate enough to be living and reigning when men like Albrecht Durer of Nuremberg and Hans Burgkmair of Augsburg had brought the art of the woodcut to heights that had never been surpassed.” *

Many of the greatest woodcuts of the German Renaissance owe their existence to the patronage of Maximilian. As well as Durer and Hans Burgkmair (1473-1531), The Emperor regularly commissioned such fine woodcut designers as Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Springinklee, Wolf Huber, Hans Schaufelein and Leonhard Beck to work on his great sets and individual woodcuts. Undoubtedly, the most famous woodcut set created by these (or any other) artists is the brilliant, Triumphs of Maximilian, consisting of 137 sequential woodcuts. Other fine sets for Maximilian include the Weiskunig (The White King), the Theuerdank (The Knight of Adventurous Thoughts), Freydal, Ehrenpforte (Triumphal Arch) and Images of the Saints Connected to the Royal Family of Maximilian. This original woodcut, entitled, Saint Waudru, belongs to the last named set.
It was thought in the past that Hans Burgkmair was responsible for all 119 woodcuts of Images of the Saints. In fact, three artists designed the woodcuts; Burgkmair, Hans Schaufelein and Leonhard Beck. An Augsburg painter, illuminator and illustrator it is assumed Beck learned woodcut techniques from Burgkmair, who also resided in Augsburg. In 1503 Leonhard Beck worked in the studio of Hans Holbein. In 1512 he travelled to the court of Maximilian and designed woodcuts there until around 1520. The paintings and woodcuts of Leonhard Beck are today included in public museums in Vienna, Augsburg, Strasbourg and London.
Most of the great sets of woodcuts created for the court of Maximilian were printed in very few s during his life and are now of the greatest rarity. In the 1790's, however, the great art scholar and author, Adam von Bartsch (1757-1821) was able to secure the original blocks and print new editions of both The Triumphs of Maximilian (1796) and Images of the Saints (1799). This of Saint Waudru originates from this 1799 edition.
