Title: Woman of Taxco (Mujer de Taxco) Cabeza de Mujer (Head of a Woman)
Artist: Arenal, Luis (Mexico City, 1909 - 1985)
Date: 1947
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Associated American Artists, New York
Edition: Limited Edition of Two Hundred and Fifty s
Note: Luis Arenal: A major twentieth century Mexican painter and printmaker, Luis Arenal was almost entirely self-taught. While in his early twenties, Luis Arenal began to work with and assist the famous painter, David Alfaro Siqueiros. Siqueiros, in fact, took Arenal to both New York and Los Angeles to work with him on large, commissioned murals. Later (in 1936), Luis Arenal received his own commission for murals to decorate New York's newly constructed Bellevue Hospital.
Equally gifted as a painter, sculptor and lithographer, Luis Arenal was a prominent member of Mexico's two most influential artistic associations, the Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP) and and Liga de Escritors y Artistas Revolucionarios. He worked there and created original graphic works of art with such artists as, Leopoldo Mendez, Alfredo Zalce, Pablo O'Higgins, Alberto Beltran, Francisco Dosamantes, Jose Ignacio Aguirre and Mariana Yampolsky and other artists of the (TGP). In 1944, Luis Arenal accepted the position of Director of Sculpture at the Centro de Arte Realista Moderno, Mexico City.
In 1947, the same year this original lithograph was published, the Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP), published the famous portfolio entitled, Las Estampas de la Revolucion Mexicana, 85 Grabados de los Artistas del Taller de Grafica Popular, editado por la Estampa Mexicana. (Prints of the Mexican Revolution 85 engravings from the artist of the TGP, edited by the Estampa Mexicana). The portfolio included original graphic works of art by Luis Arenal, Ignacio Aguirre, Angel Bracho, Mariana Yampolsky, Alfredo Zalce and other famous artists of the TGP.
Provenance: Like many prominent Mexican artists of the day, Luis Arenal's original lithographs and paintings were as popular in the United States as in his native land. During the 1930's and 1940's, he was often requested by leading American associations (such as the works Progress Administration known as the W.P.A.) to provide art. This original lithograph entitled, "Woman of Taxco" (Mujer de Taxco), was formerly in the collection of the Associated American Artists of New York and published by their firm in 1947. All A.A.A. works of art were published in editions ranging from 125 to 250 s.
Note: Associated American Artists: An important American publisher, The Associated American Artists (A.A.A.), of New York was founded in the mid 1930's. It was to become a major force in the promotion of original graphic art (fine art prints), throughout the United States and other countries. This firm would also include original paintings, watercolors, and other media as part of their inventory in later years. The A.A.A. commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and other major artists from around the world. It is known to have commissioned lithographs from such Latin American artists as Eduardo Kingman, Ignacio Aguirre, Francisco Dosamantes, Mariana Yampolsky and others. A fine example is the portfolio entitled, Mexican People published by them in 1946. It contained 12 original lithographs by Mexican artists of the Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP), in Mexico City. That set included works by Angel Bracho, Francisco Mora, Raul Anguiano, Pablo O'Higgins, Isidoro O'Campo, Alfredo Zalce, Fernando Castro Pacheco, Leopoldo Mendez and Arturo Garcia.

As mentioned above, "Woman of Taxco" was published by the Associated American Artists, New York in 1947. The label that was included with this original lithograph contained a brief description of Arenal's artistic career this lithograph, such as the title, "Woman of Taxco" (Mujer de Taxco), the artist's name: Luis Arenal as well as the publisher, edition and date which was limited to the signed edition of 250 s published by the A.A.A. in 1947.

It is important to note that Luis Arenal's "Woman of Taxco" was also published in 1947 under a different title, Cabeza de Mujer (Head of a Woman), edition unknown. The Museum of Modern art lists an of Luis Arenal's signed and titled lithograph, Cabeza de Mujer and dated it 1947, (MoMa Reference Number 38.1954). The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LCMA), lists an entitled, Cabeza de Mujer dated 1937, edition numbered, 8/25, (Reference Number M.2001.111.2), the (LCMA) also lists an published in 1947 entitled, Mujer de Taxco (collection, # AC1996.155.1), in their collection. The San Diego Museum of art lists another of this original lithograph, entitled, Woman of Taxco, dated 1947 (Accession Number: 2008.4). An important book written on Latin American artists entitled, Portrait of Latin America as seen by her Print Makers, edited by Anne Lyon Haight published by Hastings House, New York in 1946, p.115, lists another original Luis Arenal lithograph entitled, Cabeza de Perfil (Head in Profile).
