Anonymous French Master

To the Memory of Madame the Duchess of Polignac by an Anonymous French Master

A la Memoire de Madame la Duchesse de Polignac

Anonymous French Master: "A la Memoire de Madame la Duchesse de Polignac" is a strong gothic composition with images of death and destruction throughout. An old, winged man has just written these words upon her tomb: "Je respecte son Souvenir" -- 'I respect your monument'. His long wings and the scythe lying at his feet indicate that he is an angel of death. The dark, overgrown, stormy landscape symbolically mirrors both the passing of the Duchess and the turbulent times within late eighteenth century France. This original etching and engraving was created by an intentionally anonymous 18th century French Master around 1794. The translation to english is (To the Memory of Madame the Duchess of Polignac).

Title: A la Memoire de Madame la Duchesse de Polignac ('To the Memory of Madame the Duchess of Polignac')
Artist: Anonymous French Master
Date: c. 1794
Medium: Original Etching and Engraving
Note: Why this phenomenal eighteenth century French engraving bears no names of the artist, etcher or publisher can be explained by a brief historical analysis. On the 21st of January, 1793, Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette and their children were executed by the newly formed French Republic. The bloody event, coupled with many more executions sent shock waves through Europe and eventually hurtled most of Europe into a costly war that lasted until Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.
From 1793 members and sympathizers of French Royalty justifiably feared for their lives. Martine Gabrielle Yolande de Plastron (1745 - 1794) was the Duchess of Polignac. She was also a close friend and confidant of Marie Antoinette at Versailles. She managed to escape France during the Revolution but died shortly thereafter.
A la Memoire de Madame la Duchesse de Polignac ('To the Memory of Madame the Duchess of Polignac') is therefore intentionally anonymous. The artist who made this powerful engraving may have faced the guillotine by adding his name.
