This is particularly true in his brilliant examinations of large groupings of people, such as Dissension at the Club (1937) and Children's World (1940).

McClellan contained to make highly provocative lithographs throughout the 1940's and 1950's. His art was regularly included in major exhibitions throughout the United States. By 1960, however, McClellan had begun to examine the human form and countenance in a most personal and unique manner. Often basing his compositions upon geometric forms, McClellan created large lithographic art that is both unforgettable and haunting. Faces belongs to this part of his career.
